Removable Partial Prosthesis

A partial prosthesis is used when a patient is missing too many teeth to replace with a bridge, but not so many that a complete denture is needed. A removable partial prosthesis allows the patient to restore looks and functionality to their mouth without compromising otherwise healthy remaining teeth.
Partial dentures are much the same as complete dentures in terms of design, materials, and functions. They can be made of cheaper plastics, or realistically detailed acrylics. The teeth are typically made of porcelain for durability and esthetics.
When you have teeth extracted, it can cause several complications. That’s why it’s important to replace missing teeth with a restoration like a partial prosthesis. Complications include:

  • “Tipping” of teeth into the spaces left by missing teeth.
  • Overloading teeth on the opposite side of the mouth when biting and chewing, resulting in those teeth becoming chipped or cracked.
  • Increased risk of cuts and infections to the exposed gum.

Unlike complete dentures, partial dentures don’t require as much waiting time before they can be worn. Partial prosthesese are held in place with bands that fit around adjacent healthy teeth, so there’s less pressure on the gums themselves. This also makes partial dentures less likely to fall out than complete dentures.
Removable partial prosthesis should be taken out and washed regularly to avoid inflammation and infection.
